Up, up and KABOOM goes food prices in Singapore

Love to eat food but unable to afford it? You’re not the only one who is experiencing this problem. This may be a first to you in experiencing such an issue but to the world, it is nothing new. It is bad enough that the cost of living is getting higher, now even food?! Oh no, what are we foodies going to do?

If you haven’t heard, even PM Lee is warning us to be prepared for the future as the drought in America may affect us in some ways. This is what he said: “So when you buy tao huay zhui, I think you have to be prepared maybe it'll cost you five cents more. When you have ice kachang, maybe there will be less jagung (Malay for sweet corn) in the ice kachang.” You can ask him personally if you do not believe me, ha-ha!

However, according to a report by Nielsen, about seven in 10 consumers (around 69%) in Singapore stated that they are not worried about the increasing food prices as they can absorb it without making any cuts elsewhere. I suppose that is good for them (at least they do not have to fear going hungry), but what about the 31% of the population?

A lot of us may think that there are no Singaporeans who are facing hunger due to lack of allowance (after all, Singapore is a developed country). I am here to tell you that it is not TRUE! Even though many may still be able to afford food after the increase of prices, there are some of us who will have to scrape through the days (even now, as you are reading this). This is why, we as Singaporeans, can play a part in helping the lower income to overcome this problem. If not, this will happen….
